Jeremiah Ludwig, an independent housing policy researcher based in Washington DC, joins me to discuss how housing is becoming less affordable in cities due to supply shortages caused by strict zoning policies, and how this affects not just low-income families, but also middle-class families.
We also explore strategies for addressing the issue, such as upzoning, which has been successful in California and Seattle and involves increasing the size of the allowable building envelope on a property. This approach is seen as less objectionable than completely tearing down zoning laws.
